The CET Architecture Department has submitted the plan for the renovation and construction of Sabarimala base camp to the District Collector of Pathananthitta, P B Nooh IAS.
Every year 4.5 to 5 crore devotees visit Sabarimala. The floods last year had caused damage and loss of basic amenities at Sabarimala. Due to this, temporary arrangements were put in place last Sabarimala season. Under these circumstances, the government had planned to rebuild the base camp and the High Power Committee for Implementation of Sabarimala Master Plan entered into an agreement with the College of Engineering Trivandrum to undertake the project 'Planning for Nilakkal as a Base camp of Sabarimala', in 2018. The Department of Architecture was entrusted with this responsibility.
The newly prepared plan is set to implement improvements such as: parking area, hotel, commercial space, washrooms, emergency service points, medical services access point, and also a designated place to prepare food for upto 50,000 devotees at a time. The base camp will be built on the 110 hectares of land given by Travancore Devasom Board.
Faculty members involved in the project are: Prof. Shaji T L , Dr. Priyanjali Prabhakaran (Team leader), Dr. Shailaja Nair, Prof. Suja Kumari, Prof. Aju R and Prof. Karthik Mohan. The final plan given by CET Architecture department will be submitted to Sabarimala High Power committee before 31st of August, 2019.
